‘Shipwrecked Seeds Will Grow’ 2019 - 2021 Oil on canvas 1500 x 2000mm $3900
This artwork was created over a period of more than two years, incorporating multiple layers and ideas to explore the subconscious landscape of the time. It was a constantly evolving process, with the aim of finding hope for the future. During this time, I was researching the Batavia Shipwreck and was drawn to the stories of mutiny and human struggle. This inspired me to create a live performance at the Shipwreck Museum called "Lucretia's Lament" based on the true story of survivor Lucretia Jans.
Researching history and real-life stories is an essential part of my art process, helping me to find connections with my own existence. I discovered that the Dutch survivors of the wreck brought seeds for growing spices and plants from their homeland to cultivate in their new destination. The thought of these seeds being buried with those who perished on the desolate Abrolhos Islands off the coast of WA left me pondering about their future. The use of Green Sandalwood seeds throughout the artwork symbolizes my family and the heirloom trees we plant together on our farm.
I was also working on this painting during the making of costumes and props and paintings for the AACTA nominated film, ‘Pieces’. It was used in the film as a set backdrop to the scene at ‘Cora’s house’ behind the actors Milu Green and David Genat.
This is the first time it has been exhibited and available for purchase, currently at St Hilda’s reception exhibition space.
